  2. Demolition firm penalised for unsafe practice

    February 1, 2013 by Joe

A demolition company based in the town of Birkenhead, Merseyside, has been ordered to pay a total of almost £7,000 after they were found to be employing extremely dangerous work practices.demolition with wrecking ball

Total Demolition UK Ltd had been given the task of taking down a disused office block in Blundell Street, Liverpool, last year, when a visit by a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector revealed that the lives of two workers were being put in immediate danger.

According to the subsequent report that was made, the employees were standing on the edge of the second floor of the building, which had already had a wall removed, throwing waste to the ground below.

Inspector Jacqueline Western said that there was no handrail installed to safeguard the workers from falling, and it was sheer luck that had prevented Total Demolition facing personal injury claims or a worse scenario.

  3. Landlord prosecuted for putting tenants at risk

    January 4, 2013 by Joe

A successful prosecution has been brought against a private landlord from Bradford who was accused of putting his tenants at risk after failing to comply with gas safety regulations.Set of house keys

Khalid Khan was taken to court by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which persuaded magistrates that he was guilty of breaching the 1998 Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations and not adhering to the conditions of an Improvement Notice which was later served on him by the HSE.

The case related to a property which Khan owned in the Heaton area of the city of Bradford in which his tenants, a mother and her two children, have resided for years; according to reports, the landlord repeatedly ignored requests from the local council to provide the necessary gas safety record documentation, raising suspicions that no safety checks had been carried out.

  4. Workers Exposed to Dangerous Chemicals

    December 27, 2012 by Joe

Endeavour Speciality Chemicals Ltd. have been fined £15,000 and ordered to pay £5,000 in costs for the investigation after it was discovered that they had exposed workers to dangerous chemicals without enough safety consideration.Chemical ceramic jars

Workers in the factory had to pour chemicals into containers in rooms without proper ventilation and without adequate safety equipment themselves. This ended up with one employee developing asthma due to the exposure, as well as rhinitis. She has had to stop working in her previous role and has been found a new position at the factory.

Neglecting safety like this can result in workers seeking the help of personal injury lawyers to find out if they are entitled to compensation. Of course, it’s better for the company and the employees if nobody is injured in the first place, (Read more…)

A Derbyshire based aluminium profile firm was recently fined after an investigation found employees were being put in danger.Aluminium Firm in Trouble

The investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) discovered that the firm had been making workers perform duties in confined spaces without the proper training, risking serious injury.

Workers were regularly sent down a 5.5m deep pit to clear out waste aluminium that collected at the bottom. The investigation found that the work was being carried out without a safe system of work, something that may lead to personal injury claims, and without suitable equipment; both the harnesses and gas analyser used in the pit were not in a fit state for use.
