A former policewoman who was seriously injured when the squad car she was travelling in was involved in a road traffic accident, is to make a claim for around £500,000 in car crash compensation.

34 year-old Jocelyn Lyons, from Armagh, in Northern Ireland, was a front-seat passenger in the police car, which crashed into another vehicle as it was responding to an emergency call.

The Belfast Telegraph newspaper reports that Miss Lyons, who was a probationary constable in the Kent police force and had been with the force for less than a year, had to retire due to the extent of her injuries and is now seeking more than £500,000 in compensation.

Miss Lyons is claiming that her career with the police force and her life was effectively ruined by the car crash and she now suffers with mental health issues including suicidal tendencies.

The Kent police force is not denying responsibility for the accident but is disputing the amount of compensation being claimed, arguing that Miss Lyons mental state was already vulnerable before the accident.

The case which is being heard at the High Court in London is continuing.
