    Waitress wins compensation after falling and fracturing pelvisAn Essex waitress has successfully been awarded personal injury compensation, after slipping on a wet floor and fracturing her pelvis.

    The 26 year old woman from Basildon, who has asked not to be named, was working for the Out Back Steakhouse in Yardly Business Park, working her notice as she had a new role in human resources.

    At the end of her shift, she slipped on some spilt water near the dishwasher and fractured her pelvis in two places, and leaving her unable to walk unaided for five weeks. She suffered extreme pain for the next couple of months and intermittent pain afterwards. (Read more…)

    Printer awarded compensation after being exposed to dangerous fumes A printer is said to have been awarded personal injury compensation after developing occupational asthma, from being exposed to dangerous fumes.

    Jason McCann, 35, from Northamptonshire, was working for FFP Packaging as an assistant printer. After a few months he started suffering from breathlessness; it was initially thought to have been a chest infection.

    But Mr McCann ended up collapsing at work and it was later diagnosed as occupational asthma, caused by isocyanates used in the laminating machines.

    He was unable to return to work for 4 weeks and was left needing to use 2 different inhalers, which doctors think he will need to use for the rest of his life. (Read more…)

    Beef supplier fined after worker injured in fallA beef supplier has been fined after one of their employees fell whilst working at a Lincoln abattoir, injuring his spine and heel bone.

    The man, who has asked not to be named, was working as a maintenance engineer at the abattoir at Dovecote Park Ltd last year.

    He was tasked with replacing light fittings with a colleague, in a chiller from a stepladder that was three metres above the ground on some wooden boards.

    The pair were raised to the boards via a cherry picker, but the board fell and the man fell to the ground, whilst his work mate managed to grab a rafter. (Read more…)

    Construction company fined after worker injured in worksite collapseA construction company based in Surrey has been fined after a worker was injured and narrowly escaped death in a worksite collapse.

    Bola Akinola was helping to build a basement alongside a house that was being extended and refurbished back in 2009.

    During the work, he fell over 4 metres when some steelwork holding concrete floor planks collapsed causing around 9 tonnes of steel and concrete to collapse.

    Mr Akinola was left with a number of life changing injuries including multiple fractures to his arm, leg and pelvis and had to spend a number of weeks in hospital. He couldn’t walk for almost a year and still cannot fully use his arm. (Read more…)

    The 46 year old worker, who wishes to remain anonymous, was working for the company in Carlisle, when he was tasked with checking the can coating machine.

    The employee was wearing a baseball cap style box hat which employees wear for hygiene reasons and was not provided with any protective headwear.

    Of course the most unusual accidents are the ones being mentioned the most, with the Daily Mail picking out a council worker tripping on a mop and being awarded £9,128 for injuring their groin.

    Other accidents mentioned include a town hall admin assistant tripping over a dining table leg receiving £14,452, a labourer working on a council house garden falling into a hidden pond getting £10, 450 and housing assistant receiving £16,500 after falling due to a pot hole in her work car park.
