About Latex Allergy Related Illnesses

Exposure to latex allergy has been recognised as an occupational health hazard for many years. If your job or workplace exposed you to latex, you may have already developed a latex allergy related illness or be at an increased risk of doing so in the future. Some occupations involving the necessity of wearing rubber gloves are particularly prone to causing the skin problems. Latex allergy is a reaction to the proteins found in natural rubber latex or a reaction to the chemicals used in treating the rubber latex. The immune system of the body produces antibodies to try and attack the harmful latex.  Potentially any worker who, through their employment, has come into contact with latex could be at risk.

Your employer is under a legal duty to ensure your well being and protection in the work place and to minimise the risk of exposure to a latex allergy. If you are suffering from a latex allergy related illness, you may have grounds for a no win, no fee claim.

There are many occupations that can potentially lead to latex exposure including;

Nurses                                                            Doctors

Surgeons                                                        Laboratory technicians

Electricians                                                    Cleaners

Dental Surgeons                                           Dental Nurses

and many more.

The healthcare industry is particularly susceptible – latex can be found in many products such as stethoscopes, catheters, tubing, bandages. It can be found in other products such as tyres, rubber balls, swimming caps and mattresses.

Once sensitivity to latex has occurred, the person suffering has to be extremely careful not to come into contact with the latex. Latex gloves can contain powder (the powder is used to stop them sticking together) and if this powder becomes airborne and is inhaled, there will be a reaction even though the person suffering did not physically touch the gloves.

Symptoms of Latex Allergy

There are two reactions associated with a latex allergy. Although rare, it can be fatal in the most serious case – the latex can cause an anaphylactic shock in some people.   Usually the symptoms result in skin irritation or dermatitis.

The two types of reaction are;

  • a Type I reaction (this is the most serious and involves an immediate reaction, causing respiratory difficulties, skin reactions, asthma and in the most serous cases an anaphylactic shock)
  • a Type IV reaction (symptoms come on after a few hours have passed since the contact with the latex. Symptoms can include an itchy rash

How Are Latex Illnesses Caused?

If your job or workplace exposed you to latex, it is possible that you may have developed a latex allergy related illness as a result. Such exposure has been regarded as an occupational hazard for many years and your employer should have taken steps to minimise your exposure. These preventative steps include the provision of non-latex gloves, powder free and low protein gloves, good hygiene practices, regular screening for those potentially affected.
